You have been in an auto accident and you ask; "what do I do next?" HELPFUL TIPS Tip 1 Call the police (911 in most places) immediately. Report any injuries. Tip 2 If another vehicle is involved, get this info on the car:
- year
- make
- model
- license plate number
On the driver:
- Driver’s name
- Address
- License number
Also:
- Name of his or her insurance company
- Get names and addresses of passengers
- Get names and addresses of witnesses
- If the driver does not own the car, get the owner's name
Tip 3 If you suspect that the other driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs, ask that a breath test be performed on you and the other driver. Tip 4 Write an account of what happened: time of day, weather, hazards, road conditions and driving speed. Draw a picture of the site, showing stop signs, signal lights, etc. Try to measure skid marks and determine the point of impact. Note any damage already on other cars involved. If a camera or cell phone is available, take pictures of the accident. Make copies of the pictures. Tip 5 Report the accident to your insurance agent or company as soon as possible.
